Crypt of Decay Guide
Crypt of Decay is the step after Plane of Disease. This version of the zone is a custom raid crawl built around CoDecay essence, the Carprin/High Priest route, the Banord wave event, and the full Bertoxxulous soldier-wave encounter.
The important player version: get your preflag from Tarkil, use Barban to reach the deeper crypt, clear the scripted events, kill Spectre of Corruption to wake the Bertox event, then work through the Adan miniboss waves until Bertoxxulous spawns.
Zone-Wide Mechanics
Most normal kills in the crypt can add CoDecay essence progress. When you reach 1000 CoDecay essence, a CoD Essence Chest appears at your location and the counter resets so it can be earned again.
The CoD Essence Chest can reward:
- Twilight Reliquary
- Elemental Essence
- Gooey Heart
- Shard of Gloombound Reflection
- Ring of Fatigue, Ear of Fatigue, and Necklace of Fatigue
- Fumes rewards: Fumes of Force, Fumes of Tranquility, Fumes of Knowledge, Fumes of Endure, and Fumes of Spread
Bosses and named are scaled well above regular trash and use raid scaling. Treat the named fights as real engagements, not classic-era speed bumps.
Getting Deeper Into The Crypt
Tarkil Adan is the first access NPC. Hail him and he tells you to go to the bone throne at the ruins entrance. This grants the crypt preflag.
Barban Cryptwalker checks that preflag inside the Crypt of Decay instance. If you have it, he offers go to Bertoxxulous and moves you deeper into the ritual area. After you already have Plane of Nightmare access, he can also offer challenge Bertoxxulous, which directly spawns Bertoxxulous on a short cooldown.
For first-time progression, use the event route below. The direct challenge option is a later convenience, not the normal first clear.
Banord Pusling Wave Event
Overlord Banord Paffa starts as a proximity event. When someone enters the event area, the room warns you and starts calling puslings.
The event runs in three 30-second waves:
- Wave 1: five Corrupted or Foul Puslings.
- Wave 2: five more Corrupted or Foul Puslings.
- Wave 3: five more Corrupted or Foul Puslings, then Overlord Banord Paffa appears.
Banord can drop:
- Twilight Reliquary - 75%
- Elemental Essence - 30%
- Ring of Putrid - 25%
- Shard of Carrion Reflection - 25%
The Shard of Carrion Reflection is part of the CoD mirror path.
Carprin And High Priest Route
The Carprin route is a separate classic-style encounter thread that leads into High Priest Ultor Szanvon.
The flow is:
- Engage Carprin Deatharn to start the add sequence.
- Carprin's first add set must be killed to bring the real Carprin back.
- Carprin's death brings out Avhi Escron and reavers.
- Avhi leads into Bishop Toluwon.
- Bishop leads into the High Priest setup with Vindor Mawnil and Raex Pwodill.
- Once the required adds are dead, the real High Priest Ultor Szanvon appears.
High Priest Ultor Szanvon can drop:
- Twilight Reliquary - 75%
- Elemental Essence - 30%
- Ear of Putrid - 25%
- Shard of Blighted Reflection - 25%
The Shard of Blighted Reflection pairs with Banord's shard for Fragmented Mirror of Decay.
Spectre Of Corruption
Spectre of Corruption is the trigger for the full Bertoxxulous event. When Spectre dies, the crypt announces the ritual, signals the Summoner of Bertoxxulous, and starts the soldier-wave encounter.
Spectre of Corruption can drop:
- Elemental Essence - 10%
- Twilight Reliquary - 5%
- Corpse Bits - 3%
On death, Spectre also sends the zone message: Only eyes like yours can see ghosts, ghosts like me. This is a clue for the Nyseria-glitched decay mobs: some normal Decay knights, priests, and necromancers can briefly flip into coven-possessed forms. Watch for those visual/glitch moments, because that is where the hidden coven layer of the zone shows itself.
Bertoxxulous Soldier-Wave Event
After Spectre of Corruption dies, the Summoner of Bertoxxulous starts the event. There is a 45-second start delay, then the zone condition turns on and the crypt begins spawning the event soldiers.
The event-counted soldiers are:
- Elite Knight of Decay
- Elite Priest of Decay
- Necromancer of Decay
- Elite Necromancer of Decay
- Knight of Decay
- Priest of Decay
Each death from those event soldiers advances the Bertoxxulous trash counter. The named Adan waves are gated by both kill count and whether the previous wave is dead.
Wave Order

The event has a two-hour fail timer. If the event fails, the summoned soldiers, kings, Bertoxxulous, and event helpers are cleaned up and the spawn condition turns back off.
Adan Miniboss Loot
Most Adan minibosses use the smaller shared crypt loot:
- Elemental Essence - 10%
- Twilight Reliquary - 5%
- Corpse Bits - 3%
The heavier Adan minibosses have stronger loot tables:

Akkapain Adan can drop:

Nyseria-Glitched Decay Mobs
Several Decay knights, priests, and necromancers have a chance to glitch into a Nyseria-guard style version when they spawn. If they glitch, they can flicker visually during combat and they are guaranteed to carry Shadowed Coven Poppet.
Their regular loot can include Corpse Bits, Twilight Reliquary, and Elemental Essence, but the poppet is the special thing to watch for.
Bertoxxulous
Bertoxxulous is the capstone boss of Crypt of Decay. In the normal event, he appears only after the soldier counter reaches the final stage and all Adan minibosses are dead.
At about 35% health, Bertoxxulous checks whether a living player is carrying Decaying Mirror of Eclipsed Midnight in the ammo slot and has the required mirror state active. If the check succeeds, Bertoxxulous has a 40% chance to become reflected. A reflected Bertoxxulous gains a large stat boost, changes visual state, and adds one reflected reward to the corpse:

- Shard of Blightwoven Reflection - 25%
- Symbol of the Plaguebringer - 15%
- Coalesced Essence of Decay - 5%
- Runestone of Decay - 5%
- Blighted Nef Rune, Blighted Ort Rune, Blighted Amn Rune, and Blighted Ko Rune
- Runestones: Runestone of Nightmares, Runestone of Torment, and Runestone of Time
- Timelost rewards: Timelost Sword of Ssraeshza, Timelost Sword of Truth, Timelost Skybreaker, Timelost Scepter of Shadows, Timelost Shield of Mental Fortitude, and Timelost Torch of Judgment
- Fragmented rewards: Fragmented Boots of Despair, Fragmented Leggings of Furious Might, and Shard of a Rotting Fist
- A wide set of PoP bracer rewards
When Bertoxxulous dies, the event cleans up and a Planar Projection appears.
Mirror Progression
CoD continues the Chapter 1 mirror line from Plane of Disease.
The key CoD mirror steps are:
- Fragmented Mirror of Decay uses Shard of Carrion Reflection from Banord and Shard of Blighted Reflection from High Priest Ultor Szanvon.
- Shard of Eclipsed Reflection uses Shard of Gloombound Reflection and Shard of Blightwoven Reflection.
- Decaying Mirror of Eclipsed Midnight is the mirror used by Bertoxxulous and other Chapter 1 reflected checks.
Carry the mirror and keep the required mirror state active before pushing Bertoxxulous through his 35% health check.
Plane Of Nightmare Access
After Bertoxxulous dies, hail the Planar Projection. It grants Plane of Nightmare access if you do not already have it, shares that access through the group or raid when eligible, and offers the Plane of Nightmares dynamic zone.
Say Plane of Nightmares DZ to create the instance, then say ready to enter.
Practical Route
Hail Tarkil Adan for the preflag, then use Barban Cryptwalker inside the instance to move deeper. Clear the Banord event and the High Priest route if you need their mirror pieces. When ready for the main event, kill Spectre of Corruption to start the Bertox soldier waves.
During the Bertox event, keep clearing the event soldiers until the Adan waves appear. Do not leave prior Adan waves alive; later waves and Bertox himself are gated behind those kills. After Bhaly, Meedo, Qezzin, and Pzo die, keep the area controlled until Bertoxxulous manifests.
If you are chasing reflected progression, make sure the Decaying Mirror is ready before Bertox reaches 35%.
